Diese enormen Textmengen sind von Humanübersetzern – also mit menschlicher Arbeitskraft – nicht zu bewältigen und sprengen jeglichen Kostenrahmen. Hier setzt die automatisierte Übersetzung an: Der Einsatz von CAT-Tools und Maschineller Übersetzung eröffnet unseren Kunden eine große Chance und generiert Mehrwert.
Es ist noch nicht lange her, da haben Online-Übersetzungsdienste wie Yahoo und Google radebrechende Übersetzungslacher fabriziert. In den letzten 15 Jahren haben Machine Translation Engines eine rasante Entwicklung hingelegt. Je nach Textart und Sprachkombination liefert Maschinelle Übersetzung inzwischen verblüffend gute Ergebnisse – in Sekundenschnelle.
Welche Texte sind geeignet?
Je weniger Kontext und kulturelle Referenzen der Ausgangstext hat, desto eher kann der Übersetzungsprozess automatisiert werden. Solche Wortlisten sind beispielsweise User Interface-Texte, Fehler- und Meldetexte, Stammdaten. Maschinelle Übersetzung kann auch gut für repetitive und strukturierte Texte, die terminologisch genormt sind, eingesetzt werden. Beispiele hierfür sind Bedienungsanleitungen, Protokolle oder Urkunden und Zeugnisse.
Doch ganz ohne menschliches Zutun wird es nicht gehen. Selbst wenn der Übersetzungsprozess durch den kontinuierlichen Ausbau von CAT-Tools und bei standardisierten Texten durch den Einsatz von maschinellen Übersetzungen effizienter wird, führen erst das Pre Editing des Ausgangstextes und das Post Editing nach der Übersetzung zum Erfolg.

Grob gesagt mehr Geld im Börserl und schnellere Durchlaufzeiten. Mit dem Preis ist es aber so eine Sache, denn dieser hängt stark von Ihren Anforderungen und der angestrebten Qualität ab:

- Haben Sie die notwendigen Vorarbeiten in puncto Terminologie geleistet?
- Welches System, welches Tool eignet sich, und wie müssen Sie Ihre Prozesse umstellen?

Some definitions
Machine translation (MT): the automatic translation of text from one natural language to another using a computer application.
Post-edit (PE): process of post-editing to obtain a product comparable to a product obtained by human translation.
Full post-editing: process of post-editing to obtain a product comparable to a product obtained by human translation.
Light post-editing: process of post-editing to obtain a merely comprehensible text without any attempt to produce a product comparable to a product obtained by human translation.
Pre-editing: using relatively short sentences, avoiding certain complex or ambiguous syntactic structures or ensuring that the same term is used consistently, without synonyms. It often means cleaning up the source language content by spell-checking, format checking and tagging texts such as addresses and proper names to prevent translation.
Tasks of post-editors
The main goal of a post-editor is similar to that of a translator. Instead of directly translating the text, however, they read the machine’s translation output, evaluate it, and, if necessary, turn it into a comprehensible and correct text, which should resemble a human translation. This applies especially to full post-editing; light post-editing will produce a less “perfect” text, comprehension being the key.
Corresponding qualifications
These mirror those of a professional translator. PEs should either: have a degree in translation, a degree in any other field and an additional of two years of professional experience in translation and/PE or alternatively at least five years of professional experience in translation/PE.
